# Do you actually need a mesh Wi-Fi system?

Mesh is worth the extra cost if your home is over about 1,500 square feet, has
more than one floor, or has thick interior walls (brick, plaster, concrete).
Below that, a single well-placed router usually covers the whole house for
less money.

## What mesh fixes that a single router can't

A single router has one radio broadcasting from one spot, so signal strength
drops the further you get from it. A mesh system uses two or three units
(a "node" or two, plus the main router) spread through the house, each one
handing your devices off to the next as you move around. The practical
result is no more dead zone in the back bedroom or garage.

Add a node for every solid wall or floor between the router and the room
that currently drops signal, rather than guessing at square footage alone.

## Setting it up

- Place the main node where your internet connection enters the house, and
  run the setup app before deciding where the other nodes go.
- Put satellite nodes roughly halfway between the main node and the dead
  zone, not right next to it. A node too far from the main unit just repeats
  a weak signal.
- Use one Wi-Fi name across the whole mesh. Your phone will roam between
  nodes on its own; separate network names for each node defeats the point.
- Give it a day before adding more nodes. Most weak spots turn out to be a
  placement problem, not a coverage gap.

If you're renting or move often, look for a kit that's easy to reset and
re-pair rather than one built for a permanent install; it will save you time
later.
